Computed Tomography (CT)

Computed Tomography, or CT, has been one of the most important advances in diagnostics to become available in medicine. It offers unparalled resolution and ability for tissue density characterization.
We are proud to offer this powerful imaging tool at The Sams Clinic.

How does it work?
Computed Tomography is based on the principle that x-rays are absorbed to different degrees by the tissues they pass through. This is the same principle that accounts for the small range of densities in regular x-ray pictures. In contrast to regular x-ray, a CT scanner uses a sensitive array of detectors to measure the x-ray energy rather than just exposing a sheet of film. The images shown on the TV monitor are shades of grey with each pixel representing a part of the anatomy through which the beam has passed.

Because these pixels contain digital information, they can be displayed in various ways in a selective fashion. This ability to vary the display and review the images in alternate anatomic planes coupled with its great sensitivity to different tissue densities is what makes CT truly unique as a diagnostic tool.

What do we use CT for?

Indications for CT

CT at The Sams Clinic
Veterinarians may order CT scans for their patients at the Sams Clinic.
Doctors, please refer to the RDVM Page.

Owners/ Doctors who have questions about whether a CT scan is the best diagnostic option for their situation should talk to their Veterinarian/Radiologist.
