External fixators
External fixators are used to repair fractures, straighten limbs and aid in other surgical procedures that involve cutting a bone and stabilizing it. These devices are made of rods or rings that go on the outside of the leg and are attached to the bone by pins that enter the bone. External fixators generally cause less disruption of the soft tissue (muscle and blood supply) and are completely removed after the surgery has healed. A Specific type of external fixators called a ring fixator is also very useful in lengthening bones that are too short, difficult fracture repairs and non healing (non union) fractures.
