A native of San Francisco, Dr. Sams completed a B.S. degree with honors from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo in 1984. He graduated from veterinary school at UC Davis in 1989. Dr. Sams' internship and surgery residency were at Texas A&M University and Cornell University respectively. While at Cornell completing his residency, he earned a Masters degree studying biological ways to resurface damaged joints. After completing his surgery residency, Dr. Sams spent time training in Australia, specializing in small animal orthopaedics. In 1994, Dr. Sams received specialty certification by the American College of Veterinary Surgeons and the following year was hired by the Animal Medical Center in New York—where he was chief of an orthopaedic and neurosurgical service and launched a canine arthroscopy program. Arthroscopy is a procedure that relies on viewing the inside of a joint with a very small telescope. This medical technology permits evaluating and treating various types of joint disease without having to surgically open the joint. Dr. Sams has lectured and taught arthroscopy in the U.S. and abroad and has been performing Small animal arthroscopy for ten years. Dr. Sams is also very active in utilizing the TPLO for repair of cruciate ligament tears. He has lectured on TPLO here and overseas, and taught the first TPLO course in Japan. Dr. Sams provides all aspects of orthopaedic care with an emphasis on utilizing the least invasive approach with the best result for your pet. |

Dr. Hawley grew up in Bloomington, MN. He earned his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine and gained his Master's Degree in anatomy at Colorado State University, Fort Collins from 2000 to 2005. His internship in small animal medicine and surgery was completed at Kansas State University in 2006. In 2006, Dr. Hawley was accepted into the Anesthesiology Residency Program at Tufts University immediately following his internship. He finished his Anesthesia Residency and passed his board certification examinations in 2009. Dr. Hawley will be providing anesthesia services for our clinic patients, including those outside patients referred for CT scans. In addition to Alex's commitment and passion for excellence in anesthesia care in our hospital, he has a special interest in interventional pain management and will be heading up our Pain Management Clinic. Dr. Hawley's research includes looking into how the genetic makeup of dogs, cats and horses impacts their pain and response to drug therapy. Alex is interested in pain therapies including acupuncture, novel pharmacologic treatment of osteoarthritis and other painful conditions.
Dr. Paul A. Manley, DVM, MSc, Diplomate ACVS Dr.Manley is a professor of Small Animal Surgery. He holds a joint appointment as professor of Orthopedic Surgery in the Medical School (UW). In addition, Dr. Manley is the Chief of Service for the Small Animal Hospital. He received his DVM from the University of Guelph in 1974 then joined a private practice for one year. In 1976, he completed an internship at the University Guelph, and in 1978, he earned a M.Sc. degree. Dr. Manley completed a surgery residency at the University of California-Davis in 1981 and went on to to become a postdoctoral fellow at Colorado State University from 1981-1982. From 1982-1984, Dr. Manley was employeed in a private referral practice in Massachusetts and was appointed as Clinical Assistant Proffessor at Tufts University School of Veterinary Medicine. His research interests include connective tissue remodeling in total hip arthroplasty, osteoarthritis and cruciate disease. Clinical interests include total hip replacement and arthroscopy.

Dr. Klopp grew up in Tucson, Arizona where at a young age knew she wanted to be a neurosurgeon. Dr. Klopp attended undergraduate studies at the University of Arizona in Tucson where she grew up. She graduated from Colorado State University Veterinary School in 1992 and completed a one year small animal internship at North Carolina State University. After her internship, Dr. Klopp participated in one year of training in anatomic pathology at the University of Arizona. She completed a residency in Neurology and Neurosurgery at Auburn University in 1997, where she also earned a Master’s degree studying surgical approaches to the brain stem in dogs. After completing her residency, she was an assistant professor at the University of Illinois-Champaign-Urbana until 2002 and then at Colorado State University until joining The Sams Clinic in the summer of 2009.
Dr. Klopp received board certification in Neurology through the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine in 1997. She works to diagnose and treat all types of medical and surgical neurology cases. Dr. Klopp is a member of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine, American Veterinary Medical Association, and the Congress of Neurological Surgeons.
Her particular interests have included advancing the technology and treatment outcomes of brain tumors in dogs and cats, minimally-invasive and endoscopic assisted neurosurgical procedures, and use of anti-adhesion barriers. She has published papers on research of both veterinary and human problems. Dr. Klopp is interested in finding innovative and improved ways of treating her patients to result in the best outcome for the client and patient. She also has an interest in interventional pain management and is a strong proponent of physical therapy for the neurological patient.
